The second women’s semifinal of the 2011 MCAC Final 4 Basketball Championships saw the #1 seeded University of Winnipeg College Wesmen take on the host Providence College Freemen.
The first half surprised many as the underdog Freemen came out confident and vigorous, taking an 8-5 lead on a 3-pointer by freshman guard Genadyne Charr. The Wesmen responded quickly with a 7-0 run to take a 12-8 advantage, but the Freemen fought back to tie it late in the second quarter. A Julia Anning 3 in the final minutes gave the Wesmen the lead again headed into the break.
From the opening whistle of the third, the Wesmen displayed why they were the top tournament seed as they burst out to a 12-point run with several steals and breakaway layups. A deep 3 from freshman forward Kate Dorrian gave the Wesmen a commanding 37-19 lead that proved to be a dagger in the Freemen’s confidence.
The Wesmen cruised to a 58-34 victory, and will now square off against the Red River College Rebels in Sunday’s Championship at 1 p.m.
Julia Anning’s 11 points earned her player of the game recognition for the Wesmen, while Genadyne Charr’s 9 points earned her the Freemen nod.
