Another surprise came to MCAC women’s volleyball fans in the second semifinal Friday night as the #3 ranked Providence College Freemen completely dominated the #2 Red River College Rebels.
The two teams split their season series 2-2, with Red River earning the higher seed based on a better set-win record between the two teams.
However, it was all Freemen in three straight (25-14, 25-13, 25-17) Friday night on the back of freshman outside hitter Chelsea Needham who had several effective attacks against an overwhelmed Rebel defense.
“The ball was bouncing our way tonight,” said Freemen head coach Scott Masterson following the win. “It helped us keep the momentum throughout the match.”
Red River’s Janessa Harder was named the Rebels’ player of the game, while Needham’s impressive performance earned her the Freemen nod.
Providence will attempt to dethrone the two-time defending MCAC champion Canadian Mennonite University Blazers on Saturday night at 6 p.m.
