A 5’6” freshman with the Providence College women’s basketball team, Melanie Warkentine racked up 13 points, including one three-pointer, in her team’s 49-41 loss to Red River College on January 15. The 18-year-old standout guard who hails from Winkler, Manitoba displayed a silky-smooth jumper, as well as outstanding ball control and distribution at the helm of the Freemen offense.
Warkentine was also a Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference All-Conference selection in soccer this season. She lead her team to a first place 3-1 regular season record, despite the Freemen losing the 2008 MCAC soccer MVP, Ruth Maddever, to a broken leg in the league opener on September 16.
The future looks bright for women’s basketball in Otterburne, Manitoba. However, Warkentine and the Freemen have their work cut out for them this week as they travel to Canadian Mennonite University to face the first-place Blazers on Friday, January 22. CMU dominated the Freemen 64-36 when they visited Providence in late November.
