Joel Coursey could possibly be the most physically intimidating athlete in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference. At 6’6” and 220 pounds, the second-year forward garners plenty of attention when he steps on the court. But, he is more than simply a “big-man” in the paint for the 3-2 Providence College Freemen.
The ultra-physical 20-year-old is never afraid to hit the floor hard while diving for loose balls. He put up an impressive double-double in a 72-66 nail biter defeat at the hands of the defending MCAC champion Red River Rebels on January 15. His 15 points and 14 rebounds helped keep the game close, and had he not fouled out midway through the fourth quarter, his team may have knocked off the Rebels, leap-frogging the Freemen into second place in the conference.
The Steinbach product will now lead his team into Canadian Mennonite University for a difficult matchup with the perfect 6-0 Blazers on Friday, January 22.
