The Collège Universitaire de Saint-Boniface men’s soccer team took three valuable points away from Canadian Mennonite University on Homecoming Weekend at CMU, winning by a final score of 3-1.
The Voyageurs opened the scoring in the 8th minute when 2008 MCAC all-conference selection Papa Hane cut open the Blazer defense before side-footing his final touch past the CMU goalkeeper. Five minutes later, CMU came close to equalizing when Jean-Michel Ngenzi’s cross found a wide open Geoff Reimer, but his open header went just inches wide of the Voyageur goal.
In the 34th minute Hane was back on the offensive, setting up Mohhamed Bouyoud for his first goal of the season. Two quality CMU chances in the final moments of the half kept the home crowd optimistic – first, when Adam Janzen’s right-footed volley went wide right, and then when Hassan Kamara came within inches of scoring on a 30-yard left-footed effort.
However, the second half saw continued scoring problems for CMU as goalkeeper Aboubacar Camara and the Voyageur defenders foiled multiple Blazer attacks. Collège went on to score their third goal in the 79th minute, a georgous 25-yard volley off the right foot of Morissanda Kaba that arched over goalkeeper Feick and into the Blazer goal.
The Blazers would eventually ruin Camara’s clean sheet in the 84th, when Hassan Kamara converted from the penalty spot with authority. Kamara earned the penalty when he was taken down by Aboubakrine Mbaye in the area.
The result was the first win of the season for CUSB (1-0-0) and evens CMU’s record to (1-1-0). Saturday, October 3rd will bring the next MCAC men’s action when the Providence College Freemen visit CMU, while Steinbach Bible College visits CUSB at Whittier Park. Both matches kickoff at 2 p.m.
