Kirsten Hamm, team captain of Canadian Mennonite University’s women’s volleyball team has been named the MCAC female athlete of the week. The four-year B.A student who studies English and Music hails from the tiny southern Manitoba town of Neubergthal.
A 5’10” second-year middle, Hamm is one of only two returning players for the lady Blazers this season. Despite this seeming lack of experience, CMU leads the MCAC with a 13-1 record and is currently on a bit of a hot-streak. They have not lost a single set in their last nine matches dating back to a 3-2 win over Red River College on October 24, 2008.
“With only two returning players and a new setter, it’s gone really well,” said Hamm in a recent interview. “We’ve really come together. The level of improvement has been really high. As a team, keeping mentally focused is our biggest challenge.”
Hamm will lead her 13-1 lady Blazers into Brandon for a double-header against the 12-2 Assiniboine Community College Cougars on Saturday, January 24 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
