The Canadian Mennonite University Blazers women’s basketball team tipped-off their MCAC regular season against the always dangerous Swoosh Basketball Club on Friday night.
A tight first quarter ended with the Blazers trailing by three. CMU starters; team captains Janelle Hume, Erin Wall, and Kayleigh Trask, with the additions of first-year guard Brooke Semchuk and forward Aimee Van Dam, held Swoosh close.
The second quarter was dominated by Swoosh’s slashing guard Trisha Serhal, who earned frequent trips to the foul line and helped her team build a 34-17 halftime lead. Serhal’s outstanding play put CMU in early foul trouble.
The third quarter saw CMU head coach Keith Michaelson emphasizing urgency in his team’s rebounding and tighter defensive play, and he found his squad rallying to within nine after 30 minutes.
“Jaime Semchuk and Aimee Van Dam can be credited for a large part of the second-half offense,” said Michaelson. “Both showed a willingness to crash the boards and fight for their points.”
Despite the Blazers’ offensive push, Swoosh continued to build on their lead in the fourth quarter. Led by Serhal’s game-high 30 points, Swoosh won the contest by a confident 22-point margin.
Aimee Van Dam led the Blazers statistically with 10 points and 14 rebounds. Erin Wall also racked up 10 points, while Jaime Semchuk recorded 6 points and 11 rebounds.
Final Score… Swoosh 73, CMU 51
