The Rebel men’s volleyball team came out of this weekends action by extending their regular season record to 3-0 with back-to-back, straight-sets wins over Canadian Mennonite University and St. Boniface College.
On Friday night the CMU Blazers were looking for revenge after RRC defeated them 3-0 on October 3 in the MCAC men’s volleyball league opener. Led by very strong passing by libero Branko Dukic, the Rebels maintained control of the entire match and came away with a 3-0 victory. Jeff Draper lead the Rebels with 7 kills, while John Tronrud and Rob Schneider finished with 6 each. On the defensive end, Rob Schneider and setter Kevin Brown combined for 14 of the Rebel’s 20 digs.
The St. Boniface College men’s volleyball team opened their season with a match against the Rebels on Saturday, October 25 at 3:30 p.m. After falling behind early in the match, the Voyageurs fought back to close the gap. However, the RRC team showed experience and extended their lead to capture the first set. In similar fashion, CUSB closed the gap on another Rebel lead in the second set, but strong middle attacking from RRC gave them the win.
The CUSB Voyageurs showed strong play from Myles Aminot and setter Bobby Moggs, but it was Roger Turenne who lead his team with multiple kills on the power side. Turenne, a player with some experience at the CIAU level, impressed the crowd at Red River College with his pure hitting power.
The two teams exchanged points for the majority of the third set, but it was the Rebels that would again rally late to take the match in straight sets. RRC middles John Tronrud and Erik Hansen contributed 19 of the teams 31 kills and 10 of the team’s 20 blocks. Setter Kevin Brown added two service aces and also led the team defensively with 6 digs.
The Rebel men now have a bit of a layoff before they try to add more wins to their perfect record. They will travel to St. Boniface College on Saturday, November 15 at 3:30 p.m.
The next MCAC men’s volleyball matchup will see the CMU Blazers visiting the CUSB Voyageurs this Wednesday, October 29 at 1:00 p.m. at St. Boniface College.
CMU will host a double-header on Saturday, November 1 against the Assiniboine Community College Cougars. Games are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
