Wesmen Add College Basketball Teams to MCAC

The University of Winnipeg is pleased to announce the addition of College basketball to its list of competitive sports programs. The men’s and women’s College Wesmen Basketball Teams will begin play in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conferences (MCAC) this September.
The University of Winnipeg previously had a Men’s Basketball Program in the MCAC for two years from 2006-2008. These teams were coached by the likes of Wesmen Alums Luc Buller and Vic Pruden. The Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams join the recently announced Soccer Programs in the MCAC for September 2010.

Saturday, athletic director Doran Read announced that the Wesmen would field both male and female teams for the 2010-11 season.
For the first season, both Wesmen teams will compete in the Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) with the intent of competing at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) level beginning with the 2011-2012 season.
Mick Gale was named head coach for both teams.

Assiniboine Community College Names New Basketball Staff

Assiniboine Community College (ACC) in Brandon has announced that it will be expanding play on the court by once again offering basketball to both male and female college students in the upcoming 2010-11 academic year. Basketball hasn’t been a part of the varsity program since the mid 1980’s. With the coaching staff already in place, they’ve hit the ground running recruiting potential players. Donovan Nemetchek will coach the women’s team and Adam Hartman will coach the men’s team.

Cheryl Jean-Paul to Lead Trinity Western University Spartans Basketball Team

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University Director of Athletics Murray Hall announced Thursday that Basketball Manitoba High Performance coach and current Red River College head coach Cheryl Jean-Paul will lead the TWU women’s basketball team into the future as the new head coach of the Spartans.

MCAC Student Athletes Excel in the Classroom

Student Athletes competing in the newly formed Manitoba Colleges Athletic Conference (MCAC) have achieved an extremely high level of academic performance during the conference’s first athletic season of 2008/2009.
Across the conference’s six academic institutions, 60 per cent of student athletes achieved a grade point average of 3.0 or better during the 2008-2009 academic year. These individuals have been given the distinction of “Scholar Athletes,” a standard that has been established by the Canadian Colleges Athletic Association.
